Chapter Seventeen: Careless WhisperTHE WRECK CAME into view making Ava's stomach growl. "Ugh, I'm so hungry."
Kie nodded in agreement. "Stealing drones makes you hungry." The all filed out of the Twinkie.
"What I would do to a beer and shrimp and grits right now." JJ stood next to Ava and poked her side making her gasp and slap his hand.
"Do not." She demanded, Ava was a very ticklish person and she hated when JJ poked her sides like that.
Pope climbed after JJ. "That would not be pretty." They walked into the restaurant as Kie greeted her father the other four made their way to a corner to wait for the go ahead to sit down if Kie's dad was going to give them some food. Ava pulled JJ'S ring off her thumb and put it back on his finger, he looked down at the girl and smiled.
"Thanks." She smiled at him then turned back to Kie and her dad, the man was staring at them and they all waved while JJ held up a peace sign. After a few more moments Kie came up to the expecting group of hungry teens.
"Sit down." She said gesturing to a table.
"Thank God." Ava sat next to JJ lifting her legs and resting them in his lap as the food was brought out. They dug in, enjoying their time together. It was the first normal moment they had spent together in awhile where they didn't have to stress over a treasure hunt and it felt good. Ava sat back in her chair full and tired of eating, she watched Kie as she asked John B to dance with her. He stood and they danced, the boy twirling her around. Ava smiled and pulled JJ to his feet. "Dance with me, pretty boy."
"I don't dance, Ava."
"Well tonight you do." She wrapped her arms around his neck while his hands snaked around her waist, they moved in lazy circles. His nose brushed against hers.

"Well, you are dancing." Her fingers moved up the back of his neck and into his hair. Any stranger would say they were about to kiss but they both knew it wasn't going happen, especially not in front of their friends. Even though their lips were inches apart and their breathing mingled with each other, they weren't going to do it. Ava hugged him suddenly, her eyes landing on Pope who looked longingly toward Kie and John B. "I'll be back." She whispered to JJ pulling away and walking up to Pope, holding her hand out. "Come on."
Pope shook his head. "I'm good, thanks."
She wiggled her fingers, not giving up that easy. "Come on, Pope. JJ has two left feet and even though you're a mathlete, I know you can dance." He chuckled lowly, taking her hand and slowly standing up. She smiled, feeling accomplished with herself seeing Pope smile as well. They danced slowly as he still watched Kie and John B. "You know, you could always talk to her." She told him quietly.
He shook his head quickly looking away from the pair. "I don't know what you're talking about." Pope dismissed making Ava raise an eyebrow.
"Could you be any more transparent?" She scoffed holding his face in her hands then whispering. "You like Kie." Pope gulped before removing her hands.
"No I don't."
Ava simply sighed and patted his shoulder. "Whenever you're ready." She made her way back to JJ sitting next to him. That's how the rest of the night went laughing and talking being regular teenagers who weren't on a mission to become filthy rich.

Ava jumped into the water with John B and Kiara, surfacing with a laugh before sinking into the water to flip off the camera then blow a kiss. JJ shook his head with a smirk. "Okay, look, once we get footage of the wreck we take it to the lawyer in town and we'll file a formal claim." John B explained before a shriek left his mouth when Ava grabbed his foot under the water.
She came up laughing again. "Gotcha." He splashed her with water.
"It's such bullsh*t, we gotta do that." JJ complained.
"Well there is the maritime salvage law." Pope said. "You can't just go to the ocean floor and scoop a bunch a stuff up." He informed standing next to JJ leaning against the railing while they watched their friends swim.
"I know, I know, it's just lawyers aren't cheap." JJ spoke, Ava nodded in agreement.
"Well as soon as they see the footage they'll work for a comp." John B told them.
Kie looked over at him. "How do you know all of that?" She asked.
"'Cause my dad said it like a million times." He responded.
"Yeah that's fair." She swam over to the ladder, climbing it and resting on the rungs.
Ava whistled. "Damn girl." She cat called, Kie looked back at her and winked. Cammy came running down the dock, barking then jumped into the water.
John B's eyes lit up at the sight of the dog. "Oh my God, my baby!" He swam toward her, petting her as she licked his face. Ava looked at her home, confused on how she got out. She made her way out of the water before heading home.
"Ava, hold up." She stopped when she heard JJ call out as he caught up with her. "Where are you going?"
"Cammy was inside, I'm gonna go see how she got out." Ava continued walking, JJ now beside her.
Ava swung open the back door of her home to find her mother. It was strange seeing the woman home in the middle of the day. "Mom?" Ava called to Corrine who had her back turned to the kids.
She looked back, turning around. "Avani, there you are. I saw you kids out for a swim and decided to let Cammy join."
Ava's eyes scanned the room but her mother was the only other person there. And surprisingly enough the woman was even sober. "What are you doing here?"
Corrine laughed. "Don't be like that, Avani. I live here too." The woman then turned to the boy. "JJ, how are you doing, hun?"
JJ swallowed a lump in his throat, the last time he had seen Corrine she didn't even remember him. "Um, I'm good, Ms. Blake." He scratched the back of his neck nervously.
"Mom, if you're looking for money, I don't have any-"
"Quit being ridiculous." Corrine interrupted her daughter. "Is it really so terrible for me to be home?"
"Well seeing as you're only here when you're wasted and need a place to crash or when you need something, excuse me for being so skeptical of my sh*t mother." Ava growled stepping forward.
"Ava, come on." JJ grabbed her wrist only for her to yank away from his grip.
Corrine took a deep breath. "You do not speak to your mother that way, Avani."
"Yeah, well some lousy excuse of a mother you are." She walked out the back door, JJ behind her as she joined her friends again as if nothing even happened.
