What UberEats Is And How It Works (2024)

Uber Eats is a food delivery service that lets users order food and drinks from a large number of local restaurants, bars, and cafes via the official Uber Eats website and its iOS and Android apps.

The service originally launched as a part of the main Uber app in 2014 as UberFRESH but soon spun-off into its own app and was renamed as UberEATS the following year. UberEATS has since rebranded itself as Uber Eats.

How to Make an Order on Uber Eats

Food orders can be made via the official Uber Eats smartphone apps on Android and iOS smart devices and on the Uber Eats website.

Uber Eats uses the same account information from the main Uber service so you don't need to create a separate account to make an order. All of your contact information and payment details should load within Uber Eats after you log in.

While these steps show how to order food from the Uber Eats website, the process is nearly identical for when placing an order on either of the apps.

  1. Open your preferred web browser, go to UberEats.com, and sign in if you haven't already.

Check that your home address at the top of the page is correct. This will be your delivery address for your order. If you want to use a different address for delivery, type it into the address field.

  2. From the same page, browse the list of nearby restaurants and cafes until you find one that you want to order from.

What UberEats Is And How It Works (2)

From the business' Uber Eats page, click the menu items to view their detailed description and ingredients. Allergy information should also be provided.

Clicking on a business' photo doesn't begin the order process so you can feel free to click on as many as you like to check out their menu and business description. If you don't like the look of a business, simply click the back button on your browser to return to the main page.

  3. Each menu item's listing should provide you with a brief summary, the item's ingredients, and the options to customize it and add it to your cart.

Check the boxes of the customization options you wish to activate and use the plus and minus buttons to choose how many you want to order. When you're ready, click Add to cart.

Most food listings will also be accompanied by a photo of the item, however, not all of them will. If you don't see a photo, don't worry. This simply means that the business hasn't decided to upload one yet, likely due to an image being unavailable.

  4. Repeat this process until you've added all of the food items you want to your cart.

When you're ready, click the shopping cart icon at the top-right of the page. This will take you to the Checkout screen to place your order.

  5. From the Checkout screen, confirm your delivery time, location, and payment method. If you want your order to arrive at a specific time or date, click Schedule. Also, make sure to select either Deliver to door or Pick up outside.

If you have multiple payment methods in your account, you can select which one you want to use via the dropdown menu under Payment.

If you live in an apartment building with a complex security system, it can be a lot easier to simply meet the Uber Eats driver at the main entrance to your building and to select the Pick up outside option.

When you're ready to proceed, click Place Order.

  6. As soon as you click Place Order, your payment method will be charged and the order will be placed. If you selected ASAP for your order speed, a fullscreen map will appear on your device showing the status of your order.

What UberEats Is And How It Works (5)

The information along the bottom of the map will display the stages of your order from the restaurant receiving your order to making it while the map will show the real-time location of the Uber Eats driver.

Uber Eats drivers can sometimes call your phone number if they can't find your building or front door so it's a good idea to keep your smartphone turned on in case they do.

  7. The Uber Eats driver should arrive at your front door within 30 to 50 minutes. It can take less or more time depending on how many orders the Uber Eats drivers have to fulfill and how busy the restaurant or cafe is.

How Much Does Uber Eats Cost?

The Uber Eats website and apps are completely free to download and use. The price of menu items usually costs the same as ordering in person at the associated business.

A delivery fee is charged on top of the price of the order, the cost of which can vary depending on the distance the driver has to travel and the preferences of the associated businesses.

All delivery prices and fees are displayed throughout the ordering process, on each business' page, and upon checkout.

Some businesses on Uber Eats may charge less for delivery but will add an additional fee for orders under $10 while others frequently partake in free delivery promotions to help encourage more users to order from them.

How Does Tipping on Uber Eats Work?

After an order has been delivered, customers are prompted to tip the driver from within the Uber Eats app or website. You can choose to tip from a pre-selected amount, enter your own amount, or choose to skip the tip altogether.

As the Uber Eats driver is usually gone by the time the tip prompt appears within the Uber Eats app and website, there is very little pressure to tip as much as you would if you were handing them the cash in person. Uber Eats also officially states on its website and within the apps that tipping a driver isn't expected.

How Do You Pay for Uber Eats?

The primary payment methods for Uber Eats in most countries are credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal. The selected payment method is charged as soon as the order is placed and before the driver begins his delivery. This helps to ensure that an order is legitimate and also assists in streamlining the entire process.

Payment methods can be added or removed at any time from within the Account section of the Uber Eats app and website.

Does Uber Eats Take Cash?

Uber Eats does accept cash payments for orders but only in very select regions like India. Uber Eats, much like the main Uber service, features a strong focus on streamlining traditional business models and is designed to be completely cashless in most of the regions where it operates.

Uber Eats doesn't accept Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency as payment.

Does Uber Eats Deliver Food and Drinks?

In addition to a variety of food items, you can also order drinks from a business' menu on Uber Eats. Drinks on Uber Eats are typically the same ones that are available when you visit a café or restaurant in person.

For example, if you're ordering from a local Starbucks on Uber Eats, you could order any of their hot or cold drink options in addition to a variety of food from their food menu.

While ordering coffee on Uber Eats is popular, it's important to order hot drinks from a business that's close to you, not far away. An estimated arrival time of 25 minutes means that your coffee will be around half an hour old by the time it gets to you.

In addition to regular hot and cold drinks, some businesses on Uber Eats in some regions also sell alcoholic drinks such as bottles of wine and beer.

What Countries Does Uber Eats Work In?

Uber Eats may have begun in the United States but it has since expanded to literally hundreds of cities across North America, South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Africa.

Your Uber Eats account works within the same Uber Eats apps and website across all regions. This makes the food delivery service incredibly useful when traveling to a new city or country for a holiday or business trip and can be used to get food delivered to your Airbnb.

Why Is Uber Eats so Popular?

Uber Eats is popular for a few reasons.

  • Ordering meals on Uber Eats is fast and easy.
  • Uber Eats is rather cheap and only costs slightly more than eating out.
  • The Uber Eats service is available in many countries.
  • Uber Eats uses the same account information as Uber.

Uber Eats Alternatives

Uber Eats has a lot of competition from similar companies who work in almost the exact same way as it does in a number of regions.

Some of Uber Eats' biggest competitors in the United States are Postmates, Deliver.com, Seamless, GrubHub, and Caviar while Deliveroo is fairly popular in Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Europe and Gochikuru does well in Japan.
