Our easy Oreo Ice Cream Cake Recipe is so simple our 12-year old son made this one for his sister’s birthday. This is our new go-to birthday cake – it’s quick to make (takes only 10 minutes) and kids lose their minds at how fun and tasty it is. This will be a family favourite for decades!

In our neck of the woods, a 10″ Oreo Dairy Queen Blizzard ice cream cake costs about $40. It’s delicious, don’t get me wrong – but why not make this one yourself for less than $15?

Calling this a recipe feels like a bit of a stretch. It’s more like ‘assembly instructions’ and like an IKEA cupboard, you can probably just glance at the pictures and get the general gist of it.

Nonetheless, we’ve provided a few helpful hints here and there that we’ve discovered from making this a few times now.

A parenting-win: you can make this with kids and not lose your mind. Total time on task is about 10 minutes – pretty much the project attention span of the younger set – and there is a great payoff of a very fancy looking ice cream cake at the end. Pretty much everything could be done by a 6-year-old.

And it doesn’t have to be Oreo! You can make this absolutely any flavour combination you like – just choose any sandwich cookie and ice cream combo that inspire you!

Easy Oreo Ice Cream Cake Recipe

Yield: 12 - 16 slices

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Additional Time: 2 hours

Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes

A quick and easy ice cream cake recipe! As tasty as a Dairy Queen cake at a fraction of the cost. Takes mere minutes and simple enough for kids to make themselves.

Ingredients

  • 8-10 Ice Cream Sandwiches - depending on the size of your springform pan
  • 1 package of Oreo cookies (+ a few extra for garnishing)
  • 2 litres of your preferred Ice Cream (we used Cookies and Cream)
  • Chocolate syrup for drizzling
  • Whipped cream and any other decorations

Instructions

  1. Cut ice cream sandwiches in half lengthwise, then in half again widthwise. Place around the edge of a 10-inch springform pan to form a complete border. (We've found that cutting the sandwiches squishes/tapers one side slightly - face this side in and it helps shape the border into a circle for you.)
  2. Crush up a package of Oreo cookies in a closed bag using whatever preferred crushing tool you have at hand.
  3. Inside the ice cream sandwich border, pour the crushed Oreo into the base of the springform pan. Use a spatula or potato masher to carefully smooth and press the cookie bits into an even base.
  4. Optional (but awesome!): Drizzle chocolate syrup over the cookie crumbs to further glue them in place and add more chocolate flavour.
  5. Scoop a full 2 litre (1/2 gallon) of softened ice cream into the middle of your cake. (If it hasn't softened enough - be patient and wait a few more minutes - you don't want to mess with the crushed cookie base or sandwich wall while trying to spread ice cream that is too hard.)
  6. Spread ice cream evenly with a spatula. Almost done!
  7. Sprinkle some more cookie crumble on top. Don't add anything else yet as you need to freeze the cake solid first.
  8. Tent with plastic wrap and freeze for at least 2 hours. When ready to serve, remove from the freezer and decorate with some whipped cream, whole Oreos, chocolate syrup...
