Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and adjoining Thane and Palghar districts on Wednesday, disrupting suburban rail traffic and causing water-logging in low-lying areas from where people were evacuated, while a 14-year-old girl drowned in a swollen drain. A four-month-old infant slipped out of the hands of a woman walking on railway tracks and fell into a nullah between Thakurli and Kalyan stations in Thane district. The Central Railway's suburban train services on the Kalyan-Badlapur stretch in Thane district were restored after seven hours, officials said. Stay with TOI for all updates

Heavy rains that lashed Thane city since Wednesday morning saw incidents of tree fall, loss of property and disruptions of normal life, civic officials said. The city recorded 60mm rains in six hours leaving areas including the stretch around Vandana Talkies, Pedhya Maruti near Thane station, Bhaskar Colony, Anand Nagar on Ghodbunder and parts of Diva waterlogged. Traffic to and from Navi Mumbai was also briefly affected as the Vitawa bridge stretch was also inundated.

The inter-city trains which have been cancelled for Wednesday include the Deccan Queen, Deccan Express, Sinhagad Express and Indrayani Express. These trains will not run on Thursday too because of unavailability of incoming rake, officials confirmed.

Heavy rains pounded Maharashtra's Thane and Palghar districts on Wednesday, causing water-logging in many localities following which more than 250 families from low-lying areas in Thane were shifted to safer places, officials said. Schools and colleges were closed in many parts of Palghar district in view of the heavy downpour. A number of rivers including the Ulhas (Thane), Amba, Savitri and Patalganga (in neighbouring Raigad) were in spate, they said. Some bridges on the Ulhas, Kalu and Murbadi rivers in Thane were inundated, the officials said.

Flood-like situation in Ratnagiri and Raigad districts due to heavy rains

Overnight heavy downpours have caused several rivers in Maharashtra's Konkan region to swell and trigger flood-like situations, prompting authorities to relocate people in a few towns and villages to safer areas, said officials on Wednesday. With more rains expected in coastal Maharashtra in the next couple of days, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar instructed officials to relocate people in several parts of Chiplun town of Ratnagiri district due to the rising level of Vashisthi river. Of the six major rivers in Raigad district, Savitri and Patalganaga were flowing above the danger mark, said officials. The water levels in Kundalika and Amba rivers have reached the “alert” mark, while Gadhi and Ulhas were flowing close to the alert mark in the morning, as per the district administrations.

In the past 14 days alone, nearly 1000 confirmed cases of gastroenteritis have been recorded, although it’s believed that the actual numbers may be much higher. Dr Daksha Shah, executive health officer of BMC, said although a rise in gastroen teritis, malaria and dengue cases is seen, themajority are treated on outpatient basis. The BMC didn’t disclose if there have been any deaths due to these ailments. The city has also re ported 10 cases of chikungunya and over 50 of H1N1 (swine flu). Dr Samrat Shah, a consultant internist at Bhatia Hospital, treated two cases of leptospirosis last month and anothe r in the past week. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection typically transmitted through exposure to contaminated water.

Dr Hemalata Arora, an internal medicine expert from Nanavati Max Hospital, said: “Changes in weather conditio ns and sedentary eating habits are leading more people to seek medical attention for symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting, which indicate gastroenteritis. During mon soon, people should completely avoid consuming food and beverages from outside.”

The city also registered 355 cases of ma laria in two weeks of July, of which 93% were of plasmodium vivax and 5% of falciparum—the more virulent type. There were 676 malaria cases in June. General physician Dr Satishch andra Shenoy, who runs a clinic in Malad, said there is a massive rise in dengue and malaria cases, but the majority are responding to standard treatment.

Monsoon diseases surge in Mumbai amid intensifying rains

Monsoon diseases have surged in the city amid intensifying rains, the BMC’s public health department has cautioned. Malaria, dengue, gastroenteritis and leptospirosis, the prominent illnesses associated with the rainy season, have all witnessed a noticeable upswing in reported cases in July’s first two weeks. According to the data released on Tuesday, leptospirosis has eme rged as a significant health concern, with 104 reported cases in the first two weeks of July, surpassing the total of 97 cases recorded for the entire month of June. Concurrently, dengue cases have also seen a sharp uptick, with 264 confirmed cases registered during the same period, closely approaching the 353 cases reported in June.
