Gleib’s uncle Shmuel Brenner was high up in the Israeli Government. In the Oslo Peace Accords in 1995 he was the head of the Israeli Sub-commitee on Environmental Issues between the Israelis and Palestinians, eventually reaching a deal. While giving Ben a ride to the Israeli airport back in November they discussed if the damage to the environment is reversible, the difficulty of negotiating with religious zealots, the ongoing struggle of the Middle East peace process, and Matthew McConaughey. Brenner was also the Head and Co-Founder of the Environmental Institute at Tel Aviv University.

Gleib covers the news of one of the best weeks in American History (gay marriage legalized, Obamacare held up, and Confederate flag coming down,) shares great news for women, and gives handy tips to avoid shark attacks.

I understand that many nations in the Arab world are not free. I feel for that plight, as would anyone with a heart. I realize that some who are experiencing freedom for the first time are not accustomed to it, and therefore haven’t yet familiarized themselves with all of it’s features. But I cannot understand for the life of me how these nations that are protesting us don’t still understand THE ONE most basic and intrinsic feature of freedom: That the people in a free nation are free. Meaning the actions of the individuals within it do not speak with one voice. They are not a monolith. The individuals of a free nation have the freedom to say and do what they want, without approval of the government, or any other body, or any other person for that matter. Therefore, and here is the point I am trying to clearly and slowly and carefully delineate, so there is no further confusion that has sparked furious protest all over the Middle East… EACH INDIVIDUAL YOUTUBE VIDEO DOES NOT SPEAK FOR AMERICA. They do not speak for our nation as a whole, or represent the feelings of any more than that one individual video maker. IT’S JUST ONE STUPID GUY.

This also holds true for cartoons. I would have thought that the word itself, ‘cartoon,’ would make clear that they shouldn’t be taken so seriously, being that they are, after all, CARTOONS! JOKES! A satirical point. Not a life or death matter. Even if your holiest scripture forbids any depiction whatsoever of your prophet, does it make any rational sense that should it happen, someone should be MURDERED for it? Is that what your religion truly wants? (I had to capitalize the word ‘murdered’ there, since I already capitalized the word ‘jokes’ and the word ‘cartoons,’ and again, by definition, those words are far less serious than murder.) And then, by simple, obvious logic, they do not EVER deserve murder. (The word ‘ever’ is sort of benign, but still I felt like capitalizing it. Because it’s an important detail. Because it’s not cool to even kill people once in a blue moon over something so stupid.) And much like many cartoons and jokes, most YouTube videos are very, very stupid. Most of them are hardly thought out at all.

Therefore, please allow me to repeat… YOUTUBE VIDEOS DO NOT SPEAK FOR AMERICA. This is not spin, or an opinion, or even an apology. This is simply a fact. Some random person shoots and uploads a video, and the President never even knows about it. Not even Congress gets alerted. Nor do any Governors, or even the Mayor of the city where the video maker lives. NO ONE knows about it. Even YouTube employees have no idea about it. YouTube is automated. And, as someone who has a lot of experience uploading videos to YouTube, I can even sadly tell you that most often they are only ever seen by a few people. If any! Sometimes you work really hard on a YouTube video and it ends up with just 6 views. And that’s just because you watched it 6 times yourself.

So if there’s any chance you guys could please get down from your angry storming of our Embassies, for just a minute, to THINK ABOUT IT, just ask yourself if what you’re so angry about even makes any sense, considering this new information about how both YouTube and freedom work. I mean do you actually think that we as a nation approve of every one of the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of videos uploaded to this global video website? Tens of thousands of brand new stupid videos are uploaded every single day! Do you guys think the American President is sitting there in the Oval Office, national economy struggling, world economy in turmoil, people in his nation without jobs or healthcare, some of their most basic rights being called into question, all while we are AT WAR, and he is sitting there approving or disapproving cat videos? “This cat is cute, but very similar to about 18 million other cats already on YouTube. Denied!” the President declares.

The anti-Muslim video that some random individual in America decided to shoot and upload, the impetus of your being angrily on top of a building right now, or setting things on fire, or rioting based on, or in several tragic instances, even murdering good-natured human beings who were trying TO HELP your country, does not speak for us. We rebuke it. This anti-Muslim video was horrible, incredibly offensive, beyond stupid, idiotic, and just plain wrong. It wasn’t even well-made! It was so amateurish that it looks like it was made by a child. A child who is particularly bad at making videos. But it ALSO does not speak for America. It represents only that one idiot’s opinion. One out of 300 MILLION Americans. The other 299,999,999 of us agree with you. It should never have been made. But we also live in a fully FREE country. And so we can’t stop him from speaking for himself. Burn a flag with his face on it if you want. If a dumb video is really that important to you, then protest him. But please don’t blame us all. If for no other reason than WE HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Which is a pretty good reason. But only if you think about it.

My driver gave up, said I had to walk the rest of the way. That didn’t make it much easier to get to the arena. Despite my supposedly all-access press pass, security officials and Secret Service members kept giving me the run around. Then suddenly I heard a loud, high pitch noise! I turned, and realized it was my buddy from the Chelsea roundtable, Ross Matthews. (He doesn’t have the deepest voice in the world.).

He’s here reporting for E! News, and gets to interview Michelle Obama tonight. I got to interview him. Almost as good.

Ross pointed me in the right direction, and I finally made it in. So, if it wasn’t for Chelsea Lately, I might have never made it inside.

Trying to get to the Time Warner Cable Arena for my first day covering the DNC. A cop eating a donut or a bagel or something just asked if I’m law enforcement. I said no, I’m a reporter for NPR. “This entrance is just for Police or Secret Service.” We’re still driving around in circles, twenty minutes later. The world is completely insane. We live in a civilization of highly ordered chaos. All of it. The chaos just happens sporadically enough that we are fooled into thinking it’s supposed to make sense. But maybe it’s not.

There’s not much in the way of logic that points us to the conclusion that our existence affects anything outside of our little planet. Let alone that we are due some sort of inherent, cosmic justice. Why would we be when we just made the rules up? Our parameters are human constructs, yet we assume the air agrees to play by our rules. When in fact we’re just incredibly lucky that we get to play by its.

I said our planet is little. But that’s really a pretty generous adjective, considering we are very literally a small dot even in just the fraction of what’s out there that we’ve been able to photograph. Think I’m exaggerating? I thought so too, until I saw this picture a few years back. Taken by the Voyager 1 Spacecraft as it exited our solar system, 4 billion miles from Earth. (Earth is the dot by the arrow. Seriously.)

Still torn if you should update your profile picture again this month?

Our planet is tiny. But it has a huge ego. It’s like a freckle on someone’s face feeling important, amidst a stadium packed with people, in a densely populated country, with tons of big corporations and powerful brands dominating the attention of the planet, diverting the focus you deserve for being a dot on someone’s face. And despite the obvious absurdity of that idea, it actually happened on our planet. The dot was on the face of Cindy Crawford. And it became very famous and important.

At the same time mind you, the planet had no shortage of the myriad problems we still have today. Oppressive governments, world hunger, nothing good on TV, the usual. But that dot, in the middle of a stadium, in a packed country, on an egotistical planet, became a powerful, global brand and a big corporation itself. Someone’s face dot.

And you fast forward just twenty years, out of the 100 plus BILLION year history of this little Earth, and that little, unimportant mole became The Kardashians. And people far more interested in it than the evening news, or their own pesky little lives.

Now, I’m not trying to blame this all on Cindy Crawford. I actually always liked Cindy Crawford. For a time as a young boy, I even liked her A LOT. And hers wasn’t the first face dot we became obsessed with. We also became very enamored with Marilyn Monroe’s. And millions still are, more than 50 years after her death. Something about moles I guess. Maybe it’s that they are mysterious, round little dots, that sometimes expand into big, complicated things. Much like our planet did. (Or maybe it’s cuz they’re on the bodies of gorgeous women. I’m going first theory.)

More important than placing blame anyway, is that I don’t see this as any kind of problem. Although it may not seem like it, I’m not really criticizing this shallowness of ours at all. Our repeated decision as a species to place way too much value on insignificant things is actually a pretty smart move. Because it’s just as valid as any other, and in the grand scheme, it keeps us humble. Because placing such importance on the unimportant is a roundabout way to admit that we know, as a whole, that we aren’t that important. And because we’re not that efficient either, we display this knowledge in a roundabout way. This is good too, because if nothing we do really matters, then efficiency would be a pretty stupid goal. Makes more sense to let go and enjoy the ride.

And why not? It’s like catching a wave on a surfboard your first time out, thrust into an adrenaline rush that somehow you’re able to navigate, intuiting how to keep riding it, and realizing the absurdity and randomness and miniscule odds of it even being possible. And then doing a flip on the surfboard. Because you realize that while you’re riding it, you get to do whatever you want. Like Michael J. Fox in “Teen Wolf” doing a flip on the roof of the van, once he embraces that he’s a werewolf now. (Or a million other examples, I just like that movie. And any example is as good as any other.) So while surfing this wave that you were lucky enough to catch, you do a flip, or smile, or pee in the ocean, or watch someone else surfing better than you. Whatever you want. Simply because you can. And because no one knows how long the ride will last. And because the only thing you can know for sure, is that it feels good, and it’s incredibly fun.

What’s really amazing though is that all of this is taking place on a little dot. And we get to ride it through outer space.

When I stumbled upon an article titled “Lab tech parties with escaped monkeys” I had no choice but to click. The sub-heading “University employee found with pants down, monkeys roaming free” made my click all the more inevitable. Who are we kidding? I already clicked the moment I saw the word monkeys. Everybody loves monkeys. Even if you’re afraid of them, you also deep down think they’re pretty cool. I have a theory as to why. I think it’s because we all know that at our core, we’re just complicated monkeys. I used to think of us humans as monkeys that have done well. But now I see us more as monkeys who took the nice, natural environment we were given, and the neuroses-free instincts we had built in, and twisted it all into an overly detailed, way-too-complicated, emotionally confusing existence. So whenever we hear of people who get to interact with monkeys, I think somewhere in our minds we fantasize that it’s us. If only, we daydream. If only we too could live the fantasy of frolicking with monkeys, having them remind us how simple and care-free life could be.

Now the “he had his pants down” part of the story, that part is harder to explain. Below, in bold, is the full 6 line text of the article from ClickOrlando.com…

“A Georgia Health Sciences University lab tech was recently discovered in a campus locker room engaging in unusual behavior.
Authorities said 32-year-old Coley Mitchell was jailed after he was found intoxicated with his pants down in a locker room in the Sanders Research and Education Building while two lab monkeys were found roaming free, outside their cages, the Augusta Chronicle reported.
Mitchell was booked into Richmond County jail on charges of public intoxication. The monkeys were examined and found to be unharmed.”

Okay, so he was drunk. This explains a lot. It takes courage to confidently hang with monkeys, and release the fear that they will attack you and do mean things to your face. Now to the pants-off issue. Hard to pin down his motivation here. But there are only three possibilities.

1. While connecting with these organic, salt-of-the-earth, simplistic relatives of ours, he realized that clothes are part of what started humankind’s downward spiral into making life more complicated than it needs to be. And he decided to go nude in solidarity with his always nude simian cousins.

2. He was drunk, and sometimes when you’re drunk you take your pants off. Monkeys or no monkeys. Those pants just had to come off.

3. He is sexually attracted to monkeys, and was hoping for some monkey sex, or at least a monkey hand job, from a species so good at it that their palms actually did turn hairy.

Now I personally hope it was the first reason. That would best, because it would validate the whole theory behind this article. But knowing how weird people are, it was probably some combination of two and three. If this turns out to be the case, I will lose all credibility as a monkey-based article writer, and will probably end up pants-less myself, hanging with monkeys somewhere, desperately trying to prove that sometimes people remove their pants around monkeys just because the monkeys taught them a good lesson about life. And not for any other reasons, I swear.

The rumors are stronger and stronger that the iPhone 5 will be coming out in about a month. Apple, I implore you, PLEASE DON’T DO THIS! It’s too much. How much money do you guys need to make??? I already love my iPhone. We all do. It does a million amazing things. But you don’t need to update it every year and make everyone feel like an idiot for not waiting to buy your product.

And be honest, we both know whatever feature changes this new version will have were already ready when you were producing the last iPhone. But you wanted to hold off so you could sell us two new phones in a year. And you know people won’t be able to resist it. But so what Apple? Sometimes you can just deal with not milking your loyal customers for every penny they have. Just once in a blue. And if you didn’t have the features ready, next time can you please wait at least two years to release the new one? Just to give us a chance to breathe slash learn all the features of the current one?

I also heard that the new iPhone will have a smaller plug on the bottom, so there will be room to also move the headphone jack to the bottom. f*cked up for two reasons. 1. We will now have to buy all new plugs, adapters, speakers, everything, in addition to the new phone. 2. Who the f*ck wants the headphone jack on the bottom??? On top is perfect. You can hold the phone and not have a cable protruding alongside your palm. You can stand the phone on a surface, or in a charging dock, and still have your headphones plugged in. And whats the benefit of the headphones on the bottom? Zero. No benefit. You’re just f*cking with sh*t so you can sell more products.

THIS JUST IN! I just heard that the new iPhone will have something called Near Field Communication, which will allow us to pay for things with bluetooth, as well as power all devices in our homes, including air conditioning, alarms, and lights. Okay fine, I’ll buy one.

The Arizona governor’s order, signed on the same day that Obama’s program went into effect, will deny state and local benefits to undocumented immigrants applying under the new federal rules. Undocumented immigrants will also be ineligible for driver’s licenses and state-issued identification cards. Brewer’s move was immediately met by massive backlash.”

Empowering, and also just a FANTASTIC IDEA. I can’t think of a better way to calm a grooms nerves about locking himself down for the rest of his life with one woman, than to surprise him with some amazing shots that makes him think he won’t be getting bored anytime soon. ATTENTION MY FUTURE WIFE: PLEASE DO THIS.

More from the article, “Brides-to-be are stripping down either partially or completely and paying to have soft-p*rn photos taken of themselves as a gift for their grooms. Some critics cringe at the prospect of future generations looking back at these supposedly treasured photos of their parents.” Just hide them. I can’t thank you all enough for listening to this podcast I’ve been doing for the last 8 months. It truly has been a passion project, and the fact that I’ve found an audience who enjoys listening to it makes me happy. It also makes me not-unhappy, which is equally important.

To have regular listeners to a thing I put so much time and effort into is an incredible reward. My goal is to entertain and make you laugh as much as I can, while also filling you in on what happened that week on our great, crazy, messed up little planet. Some of the stories are stupid, and point out how ridiculous life really is. And some are important, and hopefully spur a conversation, or at least get your brain spinning a little bit. So many varied, amazing, dumbfounding, and interesting things happen constantly that there is never a shortage of material. And hopefully you enjoy sorting through some of it with me.

I claim to cover EVERYTHING that happened Last Week on Earth. And I try hard to almost make that happen. I really do spend a ton of time sifting through world events to choose the ones that I think are most relevant, important, or at least noteworthy to share with you. I think the news is often so bad at determining what’s actually worth reporting that I enjoy taking my own stab at it. (And sometimes making fun of it by covering incredibly unimportant things in very serious ways.) I easily spend 20-30 hours a week preparing this puppy. I need to sleep more. But the fact that people find some kind of value in this podcast keeps me doing it.

I also carefully select the guests that I ask to come on. Only having a guest pretty much every other week means I will only have about 26 guests a year. And I always try to make them very worth your while. Hopefully you agree. I only choose the funniest, smartest, or most well-informed people I know. And some I don’t know, but who I know will be interesting to get to know a little on the air, and then riff the world with them.

And the reaction to the show from all of you has given me so much energy, that it is also the reason I started this website. Because I wanted LWOE to have a cool home online. And I also wanted a place where we could riff on the world throughout the week. The comments on every post and story on this site will always be open, so please join in the conversation. I will try to post at least one new blurb or story pretty much every week day, spread throughout the different news categories, or here in the “Thoughts” section, to give you all some content while waiting for the next episode to come out. Except today. Been up till now, 6:26 AM getting this site (semi)ready to launch. And I have to get up in three hours. So it’s definitely time for bed.

But my overall point is thank you for listening, and thank you for visiting this site. I hope you do both again.
